Your New Mattress

🛏️ Your New Mattress – The DFO Reality Check

Let’s be honest — buying a new mattress is a big deal. It’s not like grabbing a takeaway pizza. You’re investing in better sleep, better mornings, and fewer groggy Zoom calls. But here’s the thing: your brand-new mattress might not feel like the one you flopped onto in our Napier showroom.

And that’s totally normal.

Why Does My Mattress Feel Different at Home?

It’s simple: the mattress you tested in-store has been laid on by heaps of bottoms. It’s had a workout. Yours? It’s fresh out of the wrapper, pumped up and stiff like it’s ready for a bodybuilding comp.

If your mattress feels:

  • Firmer than expected — don’t panic. The foams need time to chill out and mold to your glorious bod.

  • Softer than expected — you may have picked a plush model that just feels more ‘melty’ at home. Or your carpet’s playing tricks on you.

Either way, give it time. Trust the process.

🛠️ The “Break-In” Phase — AKA The Mattress Glow-Up

All mattresses go through it. Like your favourite pair of jeans, they need a few weeks to loosen up. Foam layers settle. Springs adjust. Your body gets comfy.

How long?
Usually 8–12 weeks. Yup, two Netflix series and a few Sunday sleep-ins.

💡 Pro Tip:
If you’re impatient (no judgement), walk on it gently, or let the kids bounce. Seriously. A little motion helps the foam fibers soften faster. Just don’t go WWE on it.

👤 Body Impressions ≠ Faults

As your mattress adapts, you’ll likely notice small dips where you sleep. This is not sag. It’s not broken. It’s your mattress doing its job — contouring to your curves like a memory foam hug.

Softer models tend to show this more than firmer ones. If you want zero impressions, you’ll need to sleep like a statue. (Not recommended.)

💥 Why It’s Normal to Not Love It… Yet

You’ve probably been sleeping on the same mattress for years. Maybe decades. Your body knows it inside out. Switching to a new one is a shock to the system — even if it’s a major upgrade.

You might be thinking:

“This doesn’t feel like the one I tried at DFO!”
Give it a minute. With some consistent use (sleeping, lounging, Netflix-ing), it’ll settle into the dreamy comfort you remember.

📝 DFO Mattress Break-In Tips

  1. Be patient – 8–12 weeks is totally normal.

  2. Rotate it (unless it says not to). Helps wear it in evenly.

  3. Walk on it (lightly!). Help it get over its newness.

  4. Don’t judge it too soon – give your body time to adjust.

  5. Topper fix – If it’s way too firm, add a foam topper temporarily while it breaks in.
